The First Few Days After Birth – What No One Tells You (But We Will)

The First Few Days After Birth – What No One Tells You (But We Will)

Let’s set the scene: You’ve just given birth. You’re holding your beautiful, squishy, milk-scented miracle. The midwives are calling you a superhero (because you are). The birth playlist has finished. And now… what?

Welcome to the first few days after birth—otherwise known as the beautiful, blurry, leaky, emotional rollercoaster that kicks off life with your new tiny flatmate.

We won’t sugar-coat it (but we will support you). Here’s what to really expect—and how Maia Mum can help you through it.

1. You might feel like you’ve been hit by a truck

Whether you gave birth vaginally or via C-section, your body has just done something massive. You might feel like you've been run over, put back together, and told to start breastfeeding every two hours. Walking? Sore. Sitting? Sore. Laughing? Dangerous.

Hot tip: Load up on comfy postpartum undies, ice packs (hello, Padsicles), and Soothe-It Spray for all the “down there” drama. C-section mums—your belly will need extra love too (our Support-Me Belly Wrap and Silicone Scar Tape are here for that).

2. Your boobs are… confused

At first, they’re soft. Then around day 3, they turn into hot, rock-hard balloons filled with mystery liquid (that’s your milk, yay!). You might feel like you’re trying to latch a baby onto a bowling ball. It's okay. You’re learning. Baby’s learning. The milk bar is under new management.

Must-haves:Hydrogel Pads, Silver Cups, and Nipple Cream—basically, anything to keep your nips from going on strike.

3. You might cry. A lot.

Sometimes from happiness. Sometimes from pain. Sometimes because your toast is cold. Baby blues usually hit around day 3–5 and can make you feel weepy, overwhelmed, or like you’re living in a surreal bubble. It’s normal. It’s hormonal. And it passes.

But if you’re feeling down for more than a few days or like you can’t cope, reach out. You're never alone in this.

4. The bathroom is a wild ride

Your first wee? Terrifying. Your first poo? Legendary. Let’s just say the perineal region deserves hazard pay.

Enter: Peri bottles, Padsicles, and witch hazel spray—your post-birth toilet dream team. Spray, dab, breathe, repeat.

5. Sleep? What’s that?

The baby sleeps, but only in 27-minute increments. You’ll spend most of the night checking if they’re breathing and wondering if it's normal for them to sound like a baby goat.

You’re running on love and sheer survival instincts. Accept every nap, every snack, every offer of help. Your only job right now is to rest, feed, and cuddle.

6. It’s okay not to love every moment

Everyone says “soak it all in” but sometimes you’ll want to soak your maternity pad in witch hazel and throw it out the window. That’s normal. It doesn’t mean you’re not grateful or in love with your baby. It means you’re human.

This part is raw, intense, and full of big feelings. But oh mama—it’s also full of magic. The first sleepy snuggles, the little finger wrapping around yours, the tiny milky sighs on your chest.

You’ve got this. And we’ve got you.

At Maia Mum, everything we make is designed with your healing and comfort in mind—because we’ve been there. And we believe you deserve more than just “you’ll be fine.”

You deserve support. You deserve softness. You deserve products that make those first hazy, holy days feel a little less overwhelming.

Shop our full postpartum range today and make those first days feel a little more gentle (and a lot more prepared). You've done the hard part. Let us help with the rest.
